In recent months I've developed a certain penchant for Instant cameras, which is strange considering I've never really given them much thought in the past. I never really saw the appeal. I never owned one and didn't know a single person who did. Or so I thought anyway.
I've always been a camera person..........lusting over the expensive ( and out of my modest price range) DSLR bodies and their impressive lenses - swoon - A LOT!
Instant? It's a funny word isn't it?........it's suggests something to be: quick, rushed, low quality. Like instant coffee...........or instant noodles? I guess, I was only seeing the negative (excuse the pun....Mwah) in instant photography. So off I'd trot down to Jessops to have my films developed.......convinced 'proper' photography was the way to go!
Ok, so back to Instant - there are good instants, right? Instant films/Shows......Netflix is a God send - I hate waiting to watch films when I'm in the mood right now! Email? I'm sad that the romance of sending a damn good love letter has dissipated, alas........email, text and likewise has enabled us to become connected faster. Instant Messenger - for instance!
I can't think of anymore, but I'm sure there must be thousands.........
I'm really off track now -
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is 'yes' now I see the beauty in instant photography, in an age of digital photographs spanning the internet........Its actually nice to reverse things and hand an actual photograph to someone. Put it on the fridge or next to the bed.
and I think that there is romance in that........
Unfortunately they stopped making the film for my instant 10 camera years ago......so it has been rendered merely decorative on my shelf - I still love it!
I know this isn't a polaroid, but I thought I'd put it in there anyway - and hey, it has 'insta' in the model name ;)
I miss having physical pictures to hang up or keep in a shoebox. I could print out digital photos, but they never look nice! I had a Polaroid when I was a kid and I took pictures of everything. They we couldn't find film anymore. I think we need to bring instant cameras back!

Oh, I agree.......I kind of miss counting down the minutes until I can collect my one hour photos, then looking at them immediately after paying :) even if half of them were blurry! Its all we had!
DeleteI've been pondering a 'new' polaroid......but, I am going to see if I can get the automatic 104 working first......I've ordered film from Amazon :D Eeeek! x
aw these are so awesome you have such a collection!! i have a kodak brownie? is that the right name. and modern ones like a holga and diana. :) xx
ReplyDeleteOh, wow......The Brownies look amazing!! and what a fabulous name too :) The Holga and Diana are very retro looking! You have great taste.
DeleteI've had my eye on the Fuji X200 for a while now - it reminds me of these, but practically digital :) x
I love love love instant cameras! Sadly I got my first polaroid literally about a month before they discontinued the film and so I sold my camera. I never imagined the Impossible Project would come along. Definitely need to save up for a new polaroid, eh! :)
